Von wegen konservativ, republikanisch und spießig. Bei einem Roadtrip von Austin nach San Antonio, beides Hochburgen der Demokraten, lernt man Texas von seiner liberalen Seite kennen.
Wer öfter in den USA unterwegs ist, weiß, welch angespanntes Verhältnis das Land zu Nacktheit hat. Offizielle FKK-Strände kann man an den Händen abzählen und wehe, wenn man es wagt, in der Sauna sein Handtuch abzulegen. Umso überraschender ist es daher, mitten in Texas einen Ort wie Hippie Hollow zu finden. Gute dreißig Minuten von der Großstadt Austin entfernt, liegt der einzige offizielle Nacktbadestrand von Texas am Ufer des Lake Travis, einem in den 1940er-Jahren geschaffenen Stausee. An einem felsigen Abhang befindlich, ist das Liegen am Strand nicht sonderlich bequem – trotzdem ist Hippie Hollow im Sommer der wohl beliebteste Gay-Beach der Region. Während des Labor-Day-Wochenendes Ende August/Anfang September feiert Austins LGBTIQ*-Community in Hippie Hollow das Ende des Sommers mit den Splash Days, einer riesigen Party, die sich abends in den Bars und Klubs der Stadt fortsetzt.

Die größte Dichte an queeren Lokalen findet sich entlang der W 4th Street, die auch von einem Regenbogenzebrastreifen überquert wird. Hier liegen Bars wie das für seine Dragshows bekannte Oilcan Harry’s, der Tanzklub Rain und der bei einem jungen Publikum beliebte Coconut Club mit seiner gerne frequentierten Dachterrasse. Einst lag der Warehouse District, in dem sich die Community heute vergnügt, entlang einer historischen Eisenbahntrasse. Vor dem Bau der Bahnstrecke 1871 hatte sich bereits die Sixth Street als Hauptverkehrsader der Stadt etabliert. Heute gehört die als berüchtigte Vergnügungsmeile „Dirty Sixth“ bekannte Straße mit ihren Livemusik-Bars, Saloons und Restaurants in historischen Gebäuden zum National Register of Historic Places. Ähnlich wie die Bourbon Street in New Orleans oder die Duval Street in Key West verwandelt sich die Sixth Street an den Wochenenden in eine Fußgängerzone, in der man Alkohol auch außerhalb der Bars trinken darf.

Wer mehr über die Historie Austins erfahren möchte, sollte sich dem jeden Tag um zehn Uhr stattfindenden „Morning Walk Austin“ anschließen. Die von Walking Tours of Austin veranstaltete Tour erzählt Geschichte anhand von Geschichten historischer Persönlichkeiten, die zum Aufstieg Austins zur Hauptstadt von Texas beigetragen haben. Etwa die von Jesse Lincoln Driskill, der es als Rinderbaron zu unermesslichem Reichtum brachte und 1886 an der Sixth Street eines der damals luxuriösesten Hotels der USA eröffnete. Oder die Geschichte von Angelina Eberly, die durch das Abfeuern einer schweren Kanone die Verlegung der Hauptstadt von Austin nach Houston verhinderte. Ansonsten würde das imposante, im italienischen Renaissance-Stil in den 1880ern erbaute Texas State Capitol, das man kostenlos besichtigen kann, nicht in Austin stehen. Vom Kapitol führt die breite Congress Street zum Museum für texanische Geschichte und Kultur sowie zum sehenswerten Blanton Museum of Art. Dessen Highlight ist das vom schwulen Künstler Ellsworth Kelly entworfene, an eine Kapelle erinnernde Gebäude mit dem Titel „Austin“, das auf dem Gelände des Museums steht und dessen Glasfenster in den Farben des Regenbogens leuchten.

Deutsches Erbe
Mehr Regenbogen an Häuserwänden und Geschäften sieht man auch in Austins Stadtteil South Congress, der jenseits der von einer riesigen Fledermauskolonie bewohnten Congress Bridge liegt. Neben dem queeren Austin Motel finden sich entlang der South Congress Street zahlreiche Boutiquen und Shops, darunter für exklusive Cowboystiefel, aber auch für Süßigkeiten, Comics oder Secondhandklamotten. Die Straße ähnelt damit verblüffend der Main Street im neunzig Minuten westlich gelegenen Fredericksburg. Auch dort reihen sich kleine Läden, Cafés und Restaurants dicht aneinander und laden zu einer ausgiebigen Shoppingtour ein. Das von Farmland umgebende Örtchen wurde 1846 von deutschen Auswanderern gegründet und pflegt sein kulturelles Erbe bis heute. Im mitten in der Stadt stehenden Pioneer Museum wird die Geschichte der deutschen Siedler anhand von Videos, Dokumenten und zahlreichen Gebäuden anschaulich erzählt. Dazu gehört die Tatsache, dass die deutschen Bürger von Fredericksburg den einzigen bis heute gehaltenen und nie gebrochenen Friedensvertrag mit amerikanischen Ureinwohnern geschlossen haben, sowie ihre Abneigung gegenüber der Haltung von Sklaven. Besonders entlang der Main Street zwischen „Marktplatz“ und South Washington Street spiegelt sich das deutsche Erbe in den Namen von Lokalen und Läden wieder. Restaurants wie „Der Lindenbaum“, „Rathskeller“ und „Auslander Biergarten“ finden sich hier ebenso wie die Kinderboutique „Liebeskind“ oder die Rockerkneipe „Der Daiwel“. Abseits der Hauptstraße haben in den letzten Jahren zahlreiche Restaurants eröffnet, die exzellente Küche jenseits von Schnitzel und Bratwurst anbieten.

Sinn für Gemeinschaft
„Fredericksburg gehört vor allem wegen seiner Restaurantszene und der zahlreichen Weingüter der Region zu den Top 5 Reisezielen innerhalb von Texas“, erzählt Bobby Keen-Hammond. Der 28-Jährige ist seit drei Jahren Geschäftsführer des Granit House, das sich auf typische Gerichte der Südstaatenküche und kreative Cocktails spezialisiert hat. „Southern Comfort Style“ wie Bobby es nennt. Gerade in den letzten Jahren hat sich die Stadt seiner Meinung nach extrem verändert. „Von Donnerstag bis Sonntag ist die Stadt voll von Großstädtern aus Austin und San Antonio, die hier ihr Wochenende verbringen, denn die Stadt hält für jeden etwas bereit – vom kulturellen Erbe über kulinarische Erlebnisse bis zu wilder Natur, von Luxus bis zum schmalen Budget“, so Bobby. Der nur knapp dreißig Kilometer nördlich der Stadt gelegene Enchanted Rock State Park ist dabei Bobbys Favorit. In dessen Zentrum befindet sich ein riesiger Granit-Monolith, von dessen Gipfelplateau aus man einen herrlichen Blick auf das Texas Hill Country mit seinen Hügeln, Bergen und Weinfelder hat. Über dreißig Weingüter zählt die Region inzwischen – darunter etablierte Namen wie Becker Vinyards oder Texas Heritage oder aber auch junge Weinmacher wie Rhinory, die auf ihrem Gelände eine Zuchtstation für Nashörner aufbauen wollen und aktuell einen Bullen in einem großen Gehege halten. Bobby empfiehlt zudem einen Besuch auf den Weingütern von Heath Sparkling Wine, Slate Theory und William Chris.

Auf die Frage, wie er mit dem Leben als schwuler Single in einer texanischen Kleinstadt zurechtkommt, antwortet Bobby sehr gelassen. „Ich hatte hier wegen meines Schwulseins noch nie Probleme. Im Gegenteil. Ich mag die Stadt sehr. Freundschaften, die man hier schließt, halten über Jahre und es gibt hier einen echten Sinn für Gemeinschaft. Man hilft und unterstützt sich gegenseitig.“ Auch das schwule Paar Richard und Jordan, das das an der Main Street liegende Edel-Restaurant Vaudeville mit seiner im Erdgeschoss befindlichen Boutique für Wohnaccessoires besitzt, fühlt sich in Fredericksburg wohl. Für sie ist das Vaudeville ein Safe Space, bei der Einstellung von Personal achten sie auf eine möglichst große Diversität. So arbeiten etwa auch Transpersonen in dem Restaurant, das seinen Gästen neben internationalen Weinen ein Kaviar-Programm anbietet.

Stadt der Gastronomie
Beim Thema Essen kommt man um einen Besuch in San Antonio nicht herum. Eine gute Stunde dauert die Fahrt von Fredericksburg in die von der UNESCO zur „Stadt der Gastronomie“ erklärten Südstaatenmetropole, die sich den Titel innerhalb der USA nur mit Tuscon in Arizona teilt. Über die Jahrhunderte haben die kulinarischen Einflüsse von indigenen Stämmen, von Spaniern, Mexikanern, Deutschen und anderen Europäern zu einer einzigartigen Küche geführt, die in San Antonio allgegenwärtig ist. Vor allem am River Walk, einer Promenade entlang der durch das Zentrum der Stadt fließenden Kanäle, findet sich ein riesiges Angebot an Restaurants, die neben Texmex-Gerichten exzellentes Essen servieren. Ebenfalls in Downtown befindet sich die zu einer Festung ausgebaute Missionsstation The Alamo, bei deren Verteidigung während des Texanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges 1835/36 die mexikanischen Truppen besiegt wurden. Gemeinsam mit vier weiteren Missionen gehört The Alamo zu den von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärten San Antonio Missions. Für Freizeitpark-Fans sollte ein Besuch der Parks von Sixflag und Seaworld auf dem Programm stehen, die mit ihren Fahrgeschäften und Achterbahnen wie Batman: The Ride für einigen Nervenkitzel sorgen.

Batmans kleinen Freunden kann man dagegen bei einem Besuch der vor den Toren San Antonios gelegenen Bracken Cave begegnen. In der Höhle lebt in den Sommermonaten eine bis zu zwanzig Millionen zählende Kolonie von Mexikanischen Bulldoggfledermäusen, die bei ihrem allabendlichen Ausflug den Himmel schwarz verfärben. Das Spektakel kann von Touristen jedoch nur auf einer von an wenigen Tagen im Jahr angebotenen Tour miterlebt werden, die man auf der Website des Bracken Cave Reserve buchen kann. Für schwule Nachtschwärmer lohnt der Besuch des Straßenblocks zwischen East Evergreen Street und North Main Avenue, der mit Regenbogenzebrastreifen als queeres Ausgehviertel markiert ist. Neben Läden für Mode und Fetisch-Accessoires ist das Pegasus eine gut besuchte Bar, die im Sommer ihr Publikum mit Open-Air-Dragshows bei Laune hält. Von Spießigkeit keine Spur.
